Many may think that deciding the future of a senior horse is straightforward, but it can be anything but easy. Passionate riders can be divided into two camps; those who develop a strong bond with their horse, and those who often change horses so that they can progress to the next level because they love competing and think equitation is a fantastic sport.
Many may think that deciding the future of a senior horse is straightforward, but it can be anything but easy. Passionate riders can be divided into two camps; those who develop a strong bond with their horse, and those who often change horses so that they can progress to the next level because they love competing and think equitation is a fantastic sport.
Over the years horses suffer with wear and tear to their joints, tendons and cartilage, just like humans do, and this causes pain and reduces their mobility.
So, when we finally decide the time has come to retire a horse the choices about his golden years are not always easy.
Senior horses need more care and attention.
The most important requirement for an older equine is not just to be left out in the field around the clock, but to find the right compromise between turning him out and letting him rest in on a stable, where he can feel safe eating his hay and feed without having worry about competing with others horses for food.
Of course it costs more to stable a senior horse that to leave him out to grass, but there are places where our “oldies” can retire and be very well cared for in well-organised groups and with the appropriate shelter.
These places may not be close to home, but they do exist; we just have to look for them. When horses come to the end of their competitive careers they need the right care, and it is our duty to make sure they get it.
We may have to make sacrifices, but with a little consideration and commitment we can ensure that they enjoy their golden years.
